The Courtroom Isn't as Scary as It Looks
For most kids, a courtroom exists somewhere between a TV drama and a place they never want to end up. The gavel, the judge's bench, the formal language — it can all feel distant, intimidating, and completely disconnected from their everyday lives. Kids Court exists to change that.
Organized and hosted by Shain Manuele of Manuele Law, Kids Court is a school field trip experience that brings students into a real courtroom — not to watch, but to participate. With a sitting judge on the bench and Shain guiding the room, kids don't just learn about the justice system. They experience it.
What Happens at Kids Court
When students arrive, they aren't handed a worksheet. They're handed a role. Kids Court centers around a mock trial — a simulated legal proceeding where students take on the parts of attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and defendants. They make arguments, weigh evidence, deliver verdicts, and discover that the law isn't just something that happens to people — it's something people participate in.
A real judge presides over the proceedings, bringing authentic weight to the experience. Students get to ask questions, interact with the bench, and understand what a judge actually does — not from a textbook, but from the person sitting in the chair.
Beyond the mock trial, Shain walks students through how a courtroom operates day to day. Where does each person sit and why? What are the rules of the room? What's the difference between a prosecutor and a defense attorney? What does it mean to be innocent until proven guilty? These aren't abstract concepts when you're standing in the room where they play out.
Why It Matters
Shain believes that an informed community starts with informed kids. When a young person understands how the justice system works — really works, not just in theory — they become a more confident citizen. They're less likely to be intimidated by institutions that are meant to serve them. They're more likely to understand their rights. And somewhere in every group of students who walks through those courtroom doors, there's a future attorney, judge, or public servant who just got their spark.
Kids Court runs in two locations: Cedar City, Utah and Lincoln County, Nevada, allowing Manuele Law to reach students across a wide region of the rural West — communities where access to this kind of civic education isn't always easy to come by.
Bring Your Class
Kids Court is open to school groups and is designed to fit into a field trip format. Shain coordinates directly with teachers and administrators to make the logistics simple and the experience meaningful.
If you're an educator, a school administrator, or a parent who wants to see this come to your community, reach out to Manuele Law. There's no better civics lesson than standing in the room where justice is supposed to happen — and understanding exactly how it works.
